Soc proposing the guardians should be philosophers: ones who came back to practical life, direct social knowledge with vision and wisdom, ones well trained in the other virtues, not just ivory tower or wisdom specialists. Soc knows people may find this impractical: but he doesn"t mean professional philosophers , rather leaders trained in philosophical reflection. This is not so impractical or unusual: phi majors often end up as idea leaders, managers, entrepreneurs, c-suite execs. Remember the agenda end of the first reading: show how the image of a just city models a just soul- come back to soul now, show that people are better off being just. Justice in the city was: each class does its own job, the wise rule and direct, other classes contributes their strength, balance. Justice in the soul is: each part does its function, intellect rules & directs, other parts do their roles, but within limits set by reason, harmony.
