Can we know which of these alternatives are true: is this option something we can judge rationally. Plato suggest you can have reasons to choose a: the good= guiding principle of reason and of being. In crimes and misdemeanors this choice may nto be a matter of reason: film presents it as a matter of religious faith, and maybe of personal choice and conviction. We may not be able to know if there is ultimate justice. But we do have to decide whether to follow ordinary justice. Either by guaranteeing people their just desserts.
