Document Summary

A type of rna, synthesised from dna, that attaches to ribosomes in the cytoplasm and specifies the primary structure of a protein; acts as messenger between nucleus and ribocomes. A sequence of 3 bases of dna or mrna that codes for a single amino acid. Proteins are large complex macromolecules made up of one or more long chains called polypeptides that are folded into a specific shape. 1940"s; exposed bread mould (neurospora) to x-rays, creating mutants that were unable to survive on minimal media; developed a one gene-one protein hypothesis; states that each gene dictates. Production of a specific protein; every single function in the cell is coded for by a gene. Mutations caused in step one led to the failure of mould growth, due to the mutations of genes required for the production of a specific amino acid needed for mould growth. When that amino acid was supplied externally, mould growth resumed.
