BSC-2011 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Point Mutation, Dna Replication, Nonsense Mutation
Document Summary
Scientific process: the investigation of rational concepts that can be evaluated by observation and experimentation. Science is not relevant to all issues. Steps in the scientific process: observe something, ask a question, formulate a hypothesis, make a prediction, experiment/test, revise hypothesis. Hypothesis: a proposed explanation for an observed phenomenon that leads to a certain prediction. Null hypothesis: a statement that negates a hypothesis. This is what you want to test to try and disprove. If the null hypothesis is true less than 5% of the time, then we reject the null hypothesis because the probability is p < 0. 05. Theory: a hypothesis that is consistent with virtually all of the available evidence. Decisions are being made/must be made that can greatly impact our quality of life. Junk science: the selective use of scientific research and data to serve a political, economic, or ideological agenda. Psuedoscience: ignores the need for valid scientific evidence.
