CHD-2220 Lecture 15: November 14
Document Summary
Infants ability to use symbolic reasoning to think before they act = error rate when solving problems goes down and their success rate goes up. Infants who do not think before they act = impulsive = error rate goes up and success rate goes down: some impulsive academically and others impulse in social situations. Mental impulsive (cognitive) style can remain with children for many years. Centering syncretism pre-concept: pre-concept is our symbolic knowledge of new/novel objects/events. Transductive reasoning: thinking/trying to problem solve with a pre- concept that is illogical/lousy/random = failure of logic: bad pre-concept due to centration, invented word so that it can be contrasted with inductive and deductive logical reasoning. People at their worst regress back and think pre-conceptually (illogical: ex. people traumatized at the scene of a car crash, ex. exhausted/emotionally distressed/extremely anxious college students. All of us have pre-conceptual understandings of things in our lives.
