Come up with a theory, use movie to prove their point. Arose during silent era, emphasized how it was different from reality and how it was art. After ww2, andre bazin stated that films essence lay in reflection of reality, not in differing from reality. 1960s-1970s theories focus on psychoanalysis, gender studies, literary theory. Each theorist may look at the same movie from different, usually specific perspectives.
