AMH-4172 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Yankee, Moral Relativism
Document Summary
This was the de ning experience of the soldiers" (and citizens") lifetime that every event in there life will be judged against. A number of domestic challenges arose after the end of the war speci cally regarding the burial of the dead, and how to handle wounded veterans. As a result of the huge numbers of veterans - wounded and otherwise - on either side, the u. s. established the rst every military pension system in the history of our country. This pension system occupied a huge portion of the federal budget at that time. Memorial day was a huge day for union supporters (and the north on a more broad scale) Confederates did not celebrate the holiday - and viewed it as a yankee" holiday. The divide between the union and confederate veterans persisted after the war and was perpetuated by disparities in how each side was compensated post war and how their dead was handled.
