Producing tobacco takes an enormous amount of human labor and is very hard to upkeep. There was not a huge tobacco market in the us, so the tobacco leaves had to be sent to england in order to sell the tobacco and receive profit. If the tobacco got wet on the boat, it became ruined, so it would take a lot of effort to pack the leaves. The leaves had to be put in barrels, packed air tight, and the process overall was extremely labor intensive.
