Change from region to region, city to city. Christians: started when focus became on martys. After martin luther, spain made it a competition over who had the better religion= counter reformation. Start carrying ornate items + use it to show they are better. Public recognition of jesus, mary, + saints. Walking towards the light of christ (forgiveness) Philipines: some men opt to be crucified. A group of people with deep faith who follow a specific image. Images are 300-400 years old: often carried through streets, must practice very difficult tasks. First: the cross (silver or gold) carried by young people, alter boys. Second: lamps or lights carried by guys who announce presence. Fourth: nazarines with lights following path to christ. Never been a big deal, downtown churches have never done processions. Saturday @ midnight: people throw dishes out into streets, fireworks, resurrection. Saeta: flamenco song for images, sing a procession from balconies. March 19th ( clean out workshops and burn)
