Document Summary

Arguments for the death penalty: deterrence argument: having the death penalty deters or puts off people from committing serious crimes more so than life in prison (or similar punishments). Never been formally studied or measured (people"s opinion on whether they are deterred) Also if someone snaps and kills someone then no one is thinking at that moment what may happen to them (death penalty) or jail so this determent argument cannot apply to them. Organized crimes- that is their business and they would not be deterred. Some countries with the death penalty still have a high violent crime rate: prevention of reoffending: sending them on death row makes sure that repeat offenders will not commit the crimes again. Counter argument: can prevent reoffending by other measures too such as keeping them in prison longer. Counterargument: even if there are people in which it may bring closure, that feeling would be delayed or it will not bring closure.
