Increase in awareness, detection, and better access to services. Description: there is no distinct physical signs, but identified by characterstic patterns of behavior. Symptoms include: behavior that is not age appropriate. Criteria: inattention and/or hyperactivity that interferes with functioning and development, at least 6 symptoms for each subtype, before age 12, present in 2 or more settings, clear evidence of impairment. They can focus on things with no problem, but they just have trouble not getting distracted. 3 types of inattention: attentional capacity, selective attention, sustained attention: work on a task or stay focused without becoming distracted or fatigued. Hyperactivity/impulsivity type: fidgets, squirms in seat, leaves seat unexpectedly, runs or climbs when inappropriate, blurts out answers prematurely. Specifiers of adhd: presentation: inattentive, hyperactivity/impulsive, combined, severity: mild, moderate, and severe. Associated characteristics: cognitive deficits-slowed ability to react, speech and language impairments, medical/physical -impulsivity/accident prone. Sleep disturbances common: interpersonal problems- socially insensitive.
