EAB 3703 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Stimulus Control, Reinforcement, Little Albert Experiment
Document Summary
Punishment decreases behavior over time: behavior, is immediately followed by a consequence, the behavior decreases in the future. Usually used only after less restrictive procedures were first used and failed. Only punishment if behavior decreases in the future. E. g. , boy cooking breakfast grabs hot pan burns hand does not grab hot pan in the future (the hand being burned is the punishment) E. g. , boy hits sister mom yells at boy boy hits sister again the next day (this is not punishment) A punisher follows the behavior and results in decrease of future behavior (aka aversive stimulus) Negative punishment removal of a reinforcing stimulus. Time out loss of access to positive reinforcers for a brief period (e. g. , no tv for an hour) Response cost loss of reinforcing stimulus or activity after the occurrence of a problem behavior (e. g. , no allowance this week) Extinction withhold the reinforcer that was maintaining the behavior.
