Features of language: four levels of analysis that must coordinate with one another. Extralinguistic information- intonation and such which is not language in itself: language development. Babbling stage: simple phonemes, beginning at 3 to 4 months. One word stage: from age 1 to 2, mostly single words, comprehension is higher than formed speech. Two word stage: approaching age 2, critical periods for language learning. Interactive influence of nature and nurture on language. There is not a strict critical period for language development but there is a sensitive period. Linguistic determinism- view that all thought is represented verbally and that, as a result, our language defines our thinking. Linguistic relativity- view that characteristics of language shape our thought processes. Thinking- is any mental activity or processing of information. Framing has an impact on decisions even when the underlying information to the decision.
