Puccini is the newer version, more popular than leoncavallo"s version of la boheme. Story of la boheme is about the story of people trying to make it as artists. Hedger and bower"s romance reflects bohemia- struggling to survive/get food, avoid disease. Rent is a similar story- struggling artists trying to make it in the city. Story about aztec princess by hedger- puts us in mind of bower while he tells it. Folk story (low art) vs opera/painting (higher culture) Story= princess destroys men, mission to find right man and she eventually is destroyed/burns up. Bower thinks that hedger was trying to frighten her. Story telling a way to fight back/resist. Hedger is afraid that she"s in balloon, threatened by her independence/lack of concern, feels the need to protect her, bower feels misunderstood= mad at each other. Bower cares about what everyone thinks, hedger does not- but they both want freedom and independence.
