True rhetoric is not sophistic rhetoric it is being able to relate the part to the whole (dialectic) Dialectic how to break a whole into parts, how to put parts back together in relation to each other and the whole. Good rhetorician needs to know dialectic, human psyche, and to give the causes. If i can"t give you something"s causes, then i don"t really know causes are crucial. Ion: homer speaks about everything so poetry speaks about many subjects, many crafts, homer couldn"t possibly have known everything, only possibility left is divine intervention. Aristotle"s poetics: socrates was plato"s teacher, and plato aristotle"s, poet is cause for poet"s creation, a defense of poetry against plato"s accusation.
