Was a surprising thing to abolish slavery/ be against slavery. Idea of anti slavery societies to emerge was a new idea. First territory of any kind to have abolished slavery in the modern world. Vermont at this time was its on region. Was not until later that it joined the us. 1780: pennsylvania begins to gradually abolish slavery within its borders. 1783: massachusetts sup court abolishes slavery in the state (by constitution) 1781 sued her master for freedom after he beat her. Took to mass supreme court, they ruled in her favor. Other slaves were also emboldened to sue for freedom which led to massachusetts, which eventually led to massachusetts abolishing slavery altogether. 1794: ct and ri adopt gradual abolition plans similar to penn. 1785: nj and ny legislatures defeat plans for gradual abolition. New jersey never abolished slavery completely until the 1840s. 1799: ny legislature decides to pass gradual abolition.
