Document Summary

Honor is one of the key concepts prevalent in societal norms worldwide. However, there are differences in the definition of honor for men and women. As stated by rich, honor for men has to do with giving word and staying true to that word whereas honor for women means chastity, virginity and loyalty to their significant others regardless of being honest. To uphold to this honor, women often lie to themselves as well as to those around them. For example, women lie to their bodies: to bleach, redden, pluck eyebrows, shave armpits, and wear padding in various places. They do this to ensure and prove their loyalty/honesty to their significant others. In society, a woman who is fraudulent to her partner is looked down upon and considered dishonorable. For example, in the book the scarlet letter , the female protagonist conceives a child out of wedlock and therefore faces society"s scorn.
