Document Summary

Burtynsky: natural environment (nature) vs. manufactured environment (society) Similar to chaplin"s movie: starts opening scene in a modern factory, focused on robotization. Based on cultural idea of built vs. natural: one way of looking at the relationship between nature and building. Just like cyclical vs. clock time, rural vs. urban. Sets up opposition instead of entwinement: instead of nature and manufacturing it becomes nature or manufacturing. Inflicts the nature vs. progress binary: society others" nature, cultural attitude. Commodification: turning anything into what can be bought/sold i. e. water = bottled water. Anything can become a commodity: except things like initial infancy. Nurture is learned and passed along through generations. Nature is inborn: fixed, minimal to no change, evolution is a response to environment not internal self. Gene reacts with what is going on in the outside environment: why you may have the alcoholic gene predisposition but not become an alcoholic.
