There is muhammad the prophet and muhammad the man which people had a hard time understanding the distinction is made in scholastic teachings. 3 communities (you are either shiah or sunni) Shi"ah shiah ali = the supporters of ali. Passed down through ali and fatima (his children) Imam religiously infallible leader of the shiah. Political authority is the idea that muhammad as running the polis so there is a political claim associated with religious claim that goes to his children. Spiritual authority is not inherited, it is earned.
