Document Summary

Recrystallization and melting point lab report (09/09 and 09/16) The objective of this lab is to perform a recrystallization on an unknown solid by dissolving it in a suitable solvent and recovering the unknown solid with a vacuum filtration. This will purify the unknown so a more accurate melting range can be measured. Use a melt station to record the melting range of the unknown, which can be used to identify it. A narrower melting range will indicate a more pure substance. Percent recovery of the unknown solid: (recovered / original) x 100 = (0. 35g / 0. 90g) x 100 = 39% recovered. Where i = insoluble and s = soluble and rt = room temperature. None of the solvents were appropriate for acetanilide. 0. 35g of our unknown solid was recovered (calculated as 39% recovery). The melting range for our solid was 113. 7 c - 117. 4 c. Using the melting range, the unknown was identified as acetanilide.
