GEOG 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Sustainable Agriculture, Water Scarcity
Document Summary
Domestic, industrial (greatest use in high income country) and agricultural (most on global scale). In low and developing southern countries water is used for agriculture, more developed use for industry. Therefore, developing economies rely on agriculture and developed use industry -> measurement of development. Irrigation: the controlled and artificial application of water, at needed intervals, to crops via various technological systems. Humanity is using majority of its water to grow/ agriculture. California centre valley relies on water for agriculture since it is located in a desert, so, the infrastructure of irrigation is very important. Runoff before it can penetrate the soil meaning its inefficient. Micro-irrigation systems (water is put in soil near the root) Minimize the use of water and fertilizer, since water is expensive in areas that it is generally used. Domestic demand (in canada), use significantly less water than agriculture. Instream water uses, water remains in its natural setting.
