GEOG 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Afforestation, Water Table, Old-Growth Forest
Document Summary
Forest covers 30% of the earth"s land surface. High-latitude forest type found in northern areas: evergreen coniferous trees (needle type leaves) Waxy coating and needles help trees cope with short growing seasons and low precipitation: temperate. Cover much less area because people have cleared so many. Must be adapted in seasonal climate and wide range in temperature and precipitation: tropical. Sometimes founded in areas where climate is warm but not wet year-around (alternates between wet and dry) Principal cause of canadian deforestation is not logging but land clearing for agriculture. Most of the loss has occurred in the last 30 years. Reforestation: the planning of trees after logging. Afforestation: the planting of trees where forested cover has not existed for some time. Primary forest: forest that haven"t been cut. The lost of primary forests have been increasing rapidly. Secondary forest: forests that have been cut down before and grown back either naturally or through reforestation efforts.
