Document Summary

This theory states that unconscious forces (wishes, desires) determine behavior and are caused by psychological, rather than physical, factors. According to him, there were three levels of consciousness. At the conscious level, there are thoughts that people are aware of. At the preconscious level, there are thoughts that is not currently in awareness, but can be brought to awareness. At the unconscious level, there is material that the mind cannot easily retrieve. Conflicts occur when we have unconscious thoughts that conflict with our conscious thoughts, which sometimes leads to freudian. A freudian slip is like saying we haven"t been properly seduced instead of introduced to an attractive person. Freud proposed a 3-part structure of personality. The first structure, id, lies completely on the unconscious level. It operates according to the pleasure principle, with the force being called libido. The second structure, the superego, is an unconscious break on the id that is based on social/parental expectations.
