Document Summary

Contact effects-reduce stereotypes, see more similarities as humans by simple contact and should alleviate competition(desegregation). Robber"s cave study-recruited 10 year old white boys of same. Socio-economic background from similar sized communities but didn"t know each other. This could have done naturally by bringing in children from different groups(race, wealth) To create competition, he allowed 2 groups of boys to name themselves. They did competitive activities(sports, etc) and as the days when on the competitiveness increased dramatically. It was very easy to create intergroup competition. He asked them to rate how much they liked the other boys, they liked those in their group but not in the other group. To try and alleviate this competition, he tried simple contact by forcing them to do activities together. He then used superordinate or higher level goals, he created situations where the two groups would have to work together to solve a larger camp problem.
