PSYCH 104 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Psych, Cognitive Miser
Document Summary
Seek meaning-want to label someone or understand a situation. Categorize quickly-once a small amount of information is known, we use schemas to label. Seek consistency- pay more attention to behavior that goes along with a label you have already established(halo effect) Self-you have more knowledge about yourself than other concepts, very complex schemas. Event(script)-prediction about what will happen, guide for behavior. If you haven"t already been in a certain situation you look to others for how to behave. A study has participants watch a video of a girl leaving her home to go to school. The two groups watch her leaving two very different houses(one very nice, one small and rundown). The girl goes to school and takes an exam but has a very mixed performance. Participants are asked questions and based on the house the girl left from, the responses are very different.
