Document Summary

Not all na stories form cycles or happen in any particular order but rstl is a bit of an exception due to bringhurst and reid. Rstl concerns the haida who are a nw coast cultural groups, who subsist on fish and other sea life. Prologue to story as sharp as a knife (reading things that can"t be written), at haida. Stays for 31/2 years, transcribing haida stories/myths, considered one of world"s great mythologies. Write a book about all of this, the one this a prologue for. All classic haida literature is oral and so all printed versions are not containing the full thing of what they are. Bringhurst considers reading a preliterate craft, in such that reading means understanding gleaned from something like animal tracks, voices, movements, other humans etc. Performance could be read but the work could not. Now single performances transcribed, as is valued in the west but this isn"t it for haida.
