Cells make atp from sugars and other high potential energy compounds. What happens when glucose is broken down? (aerobic: c6h12o6 + 6o2 -> 6co2 + 6h2o + energy. Cellular respiration: coupled reactions make it all possible, glucose- >pyruvate (3carbon)-> citric acid cycle -> production of atp. The pyruvate enter the mitochondria to be used in the krebs cycle/cellular respiration: glycolysis occurs in the cytosol. The resulting pyruvate enters the mitochondria where o2 is then introduced. Glycolysis: required two atp to start, but produced 4 atp in the end. Overall net gain of 2 atp through the process of forming two pyruvate. Glycolysis results in production of 2 pyruvate: the pyruvate can either enter the citric acid cycle, or be fermented. Fermentation occurs if the nal electron in etc is not present: a product of fermentation = lactic acid. Citric acid cycle occurs if the nal electron in etc is present: in fermentation, nadh is turned into nad+.
