Looks at past cases: respect for precedent. Need to be consistent with prior decisions. Precedent or from statutes as interpreted by precedent: civil law. Most of the world has this system. Came out of rome and spread amongst the world which were in uenced by the continental european powers. Type of system that rst looks at the code, and sees what it tells them they should do.
