Regression to mean: the idea that extreme scores and time 1 are less extreme at time 2. Change could just be part of a pre-existing trend. Involves taking several measures pre and post intervention/treatment. The point is to obtain a reliable baseline measure and then observe the effect after introducing a change. Taking multiple measures allows the identification of trends.
