High art vs applied art: high paintings, sculptures, architecture etc, applied weaving, crafts, etc. Costume = something used for a particular purpose: bbc has a lot of historical accuracy. It"s important to take into account the genre. As long as the designers have a general feel for what the style is. Sources for the analysis of past styles of dress: pictures, magazines, journals, books, novels, business records, portraits, lm, newspaper, ads. Pictures vs portraits: portraits were usually doctored/changed. This doesn"t imply pictures weren"t: social class differences. Portraits were more for the rich than the poor, so bias in what we see. Primary source = information from the actual time of occurrence. Secondary source = information coming from a primary. Extant = garments that actually existed from the time period. Very little that still exist: a. k. a. actual garments that have survived from the past and made it to the present day.
