With major depression medications and psychotherapy are needed: anti- depressants. Due to imbalance of neurotransmitters in brain. Depression can be shown on brain scans. Medications increase levels of neurotransmitters within the brain. They block enzymes from degrading the neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters cannot be taken through any means due to the barrier in the brain between the blood and brain. A way for the brain to protect itself from toxins. This causes neurotransmitters to stay in synapse longer.
