APPH 1040 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Gene Therapy, Oncogene, Interrupt
Document Summary
Apph 1040: scientific foundation of health- lecture 10: the immune system/ cancer. A network of cells and organs that defends the body against attacks by foreign invaders. Foreign cells may be from outside the body. Distinctive molecules on your body"s cells identify them as belonging to you (self) Antigen- specific marker that triggers immune response- often a protein. Antibody- a specific protein produced by specific white blood cells in response to the antigen; recognizes and causes destruction of antigen. Pathogen- organism or microbe that tries to create havoc. First line of defense- physical, chemical mechanical. Vessels, nodes, cells, organs, hormones and other chemical messenger. Macrophages reside in tissue throughout the body. T-cells: several types: destroy infected cells and coordinate the immune response. Directly contact and destroy infected cells with cytotoxic chemicals (killer t) Help to activate other immune cells (helper t) Suppress/ turn off immune system (suppressor t)
