BIOL 2335 Lecture Notes - Lecture 23: Exponential Growth, Life Table, Biogeochemistry
April 23, 2018
Biology 2335
Final Class Day
Final Exam Structure
o 20 MC ONLINE twice as long as normal MC exam questions
o 5 Short Answer
▪ Life table, exponential growth for discrete and continuous cases, recognize and
interpret other equations
• Calculations on efficiencies AE, CE, PE….
• Have to know what manipulation of variables will do to models
o 2 Essays
▪ 1 Essay will be global summary theme concept for entire course
▪ 1 Essay covering last 1/3 of class
Predator vs prey density (numerical response)
o Growth of predator number as function of prey density
▪ If predator can rapidly reproduce and are efficient as consuming prey, they can
control prey density
o Ex. marine zooplankton are good at control phytoplankton since they are able to respond
rapidly (high numerical response)
Prey consumed per predator per unit time vs prey density
o As long as prey population increases, predator can eat more and more of them (diagonal
positive line)
o More realistic assumption is that predator can only eat so much (sigmoidal curve)
▪ Learning, adjustment and prey rarity affect predator consumption rate
▪ Handling (eating) time affects predator consumption rate
o Functional response
CE, AE, PE, Overall Efficiency
o Seaweed (N-1) to lobster (N)
▪ CE: amount eaten / biomass in N-1
▪ AE: Waste; incorporated / total
▪ PE: when energy is not always incorporated for biomass respiration; new
biomass / assimilated
▪ Total Efficiency = CE * AE * PE
• N/N-1
