BIOL 3450 Lecture 5: 16 January - Chapter 7 – Biomembrane Structure
Document Summary
Chapter 7 biomembrane structure: peripheral electrostatic interactions with head groups or by protein- protein interactions with integral membrane proteins. Integral membrane embedded within lipid bilayer: exoplasm what is on other side of membrane from cytoplasm. Vocabulary: leaflets both have different lipid compositions, exoplasmic, cytoplasmic, lipids serve as anchor; anchor into lipid bilayer membrane; insoluble in water, diacyl glycerol, phosphatidic acid, lysophospholipid, gpi anchor, exoplasmic, phospholipase cleave phospholipids. Types of lipids in eukaryotes: phospholglycerides, hydrophobic tail + glycerol + phosphate , pe, pc, ps, pi, 4 different phospholipids built in phospholitic backbone, sphingolipids, eukaryotes; not prokaryotes, has phosphate group and is lipid. Instead of having glycerol backbone, has amino acid backbone (sphingosine: sphingosine pink area on bottom. Instead of ester linkage, has amine linkage: sphingosine + phosphate + sm or glccer, not seen in bacteria, sterols, cholesterol animal, ergosterol fungi, stigmasterol plant.
