The cholesteric liquid crystal mixture may have to be warmed gently on a hot plate to see the colors I. Cover/Title-5 pts II.Data/results (50 pts-total): PART A. PREPARATION AND TESTING OF NEMATIC LIQUID CRYSTAL SANDWICH USING MBBA. 1. Hold two pieces of polarizing film up to the room lights and rotate one 90 . Question to answer with observations: What are the films doing to the light? (5pts) 2. Put a tape “blank” behind the polarizing films and rotate one film back and forth. Question to answer with observations: Does the front polarizing film absorb all of the light when rotated 90 ? Why or why not? (5pts) 3. Put a tape “blank” between the polarizing films and rotate one film back and forth. Question to ansoer with observations: Does the front polarizing film absorb all of the light when rotated 90 ? Why or why not? (5pts) 4. Put a tape MBBA sample in between the polarizing films and rotate one film back and forth. Question to answer with observations: Does the front polarizing film absorb all of the light o when rotated 90 ? What areas are letting the light pass through? Why is this area passing light through? (5pts) 5. Try to hold a magnet up to the sample while in between the polarizing films. Does the magnetic field affect the position of the director? (5pts) 6. Let the MMBA sample sit for 30-40 minutes and check it again with the polarizing films. Has anything changed? PART B.
