Document Summary

Idea + evidence + explanation of how the evidence supports the idea. Idea = what you think; what the text does or says. Evidence = examples, quotes, diagrams and pictures, anecdote (story about something that happened), hypothetical situation, expert opinions, statistics. Explanation = put your thought process on the page -- show the reader how the evidence actually supports your opinion. *what"s obvious to you might not be obvious to the reader; they can"t see you thought process, so you need to show them. *analysis can take you beyond the obvious: depth and nuance make arguments more convincing and impressive. *practice for when it isn"t obvious, if nothing else! *stating the obvious can get everyone on the same page: you can start from a familiar place/idea that the reader already understands and agrees with. *you have to show your work: spelling out your logic is part of proving a point, and sometimes that involves stating the obvious.
