ARTH 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Black-Figure Pottery, Krater, Amphora
Document Summary
Lecture 1 - week 1 - february 1, 2016. Amphora: cup in which liquid is stored (wine, honey, etc. ) Krater: cup used to mix wine with other things (water, spices) Kylix: drinking cup that greeks would drink wine out of. Attic black figure: the first vase painting technique. Black glaze is painted onto the vase and miniature details can be achieved. The figures are drawn with black glaze (hence the name-- black figure). Flat, does not have depth - 2-dimensional, we can"t tell what is in the background and foreground. Figures can overlap and it"s hard to tell them apart. Jagged lines - lines tend to not look natural. Leads to anatomical irregularities - body parts look unnatural, overexaggerated. The background is glazed with black paint and fired in the kiln. It is then taken out and details are painted with red glaze.
