Extremely difficult to put into a sentence. Dance and larson (1976) found 126 different definitions for communication. Communication from latin, communis - to make common. Most definitions of communication emphasize different views about making things common. Information exchange perspective: how communication can be used to transfer information from one person (a source) or place to another (receiver) Meaning-based or constitute perspective: how perceptions of reality are shaped by communication processes. Frey, botan, kreps (2000) acknowledge these two views, communication refers to the processes by which verbal and nonverbal messages are used to create and share meaning . Can use traditional model of communication (people exchanging messages through channels within a context) to examine the types of research done by communication scholars. The traditional communication model contains four important components. Pivotal element of the four = messages. Messages = usual target of communication researchers.
