Moses and Yahweh on Mt. Sinai
• Critical moment for history of religion
• Covenant promulgated by Yahweh
o Pact: worship Yahweh only and obey divine commands; Hebrews
become Chosen people
• Monotheism was unique
o Though parts in the near east was not unfamiliar with the notion of
pats
• Definition:
o Polytheism: worship of multiple gods
o Syncretism: combining/reconciling outside gods
o Henotheism: the worship of one god but not denying the existence of
other gods.
Hebrews and monotheism
• Slow to accept covenant?
o Still worshipped multiple deities: Baal and Astarte
• Exodus from Egypt and return to Canaan
o Divided then monarchy: Kings Saul, David, and Solomon united
Hebrew nation
o Taken over by the Assyrians in 722 BCE
o The Babylonians in 597 BCE (forced out in 586 BCE) {BABYLONIAN
EXILE}
