FRSC 302 Lecture 4: FRSC 302 hairs notes week 4
Document Summary
One of the most recovered types of evidence. Hair makes good forensic evidence because: place perpetrator at the scene, connect suspect with weapon, supporting witness statement, connecting crime scene areas (abduction vehicles used) Follicle is the structure within which hair grow: roughly cylindrical tube with a larger pit at the bottom, hair is soft at base and hardens and dries out as it proceeds up the follicle. Follicle contains blood vessels, nerves and sebaceous glands, which produce oils that coat hairs keeping them soft and pliable. Hairs have muscles called pili arrector: hairs have three (four) phases of growth, anagen is the actively growth phase and is producing hair at around 3mm per week. The follicles remain in anagen phase for several years, at any given time 80% of hairs are in the anagen phase. Anagen roots are marked with root sheath that can be indicative of having been tugged out.
