Church of rome is dominant in every way (end of. 1400s) excommunication means being kicked out the church. Can the pope be the best spiritual leader if he is not elite enough in economic ways, must rank well among kings. Same went with bishops, which was mainly second and after sons. So no they weren"t necessarily the most spiritual. Sons we"re sent o to the church so didn"t always really care. So and so of rotterdam challenges the church and is a christian humanist. Only the church had power over the scripture they also could only read it because it was latin. He argues that the bible should be written in common languages so people can think for themselves. People were currently being burned at the stake for translating the bible. He wrote this to all high level clergy members.
