PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Sympathetic Nervous System, Peripheral Nervous System, Withdrawal Reflex
Document Summary
Chapter 3- 1 : the nervous and endocrine system. The nervous system: specialized for communication, up to 1 trillion neurons are linked throughout our bodies in a complex, organized communication network. Two main divisions: the central nervous system and the peripheral system. The central nervous system (cns)- includes the brain and spinal cord. Central to all your behaviors and mental processes: very critical to your ability to function that it is entirely protected by bone. Surround the brain and spinal cord are three layers of membranous tissues called meninges. An added protection, the brain and spinal cord are suspended in cerebrospinal fluid to protect the them from being jarred. Cerebrospinal fluid also fills four hollow cavities in the brain, called ventricles. The inner surfaces of the ventricles are lined with neural stem cells; specialized cells that generate neurons in the developing brain. However, the spinal cord can produce spinal reflexes.
