Document Summary

Chapter 5: survey research basic terms of sampling. Sampling frame-list of the members of a population. Element-each individual steps for selecting a sample. Choose a sample from the sampling frame. Provide the survey to selected elements in the population biased samples. Assign a number to each element in the sampling frame. Decide on the sample size you want. Choose numbers stratified random sampling-the population is divided into subpopulations called strata and random samples are drawn from each of these strata. Can take an equal number of people from each strata. Can determine each group"s proportion in the population and take that many people from each strata survey methods. Pros: quick, lack of interviewer bias, sensitivity of topic. Cons: questions have to be self-explanatory, no control of order of answers, response rate bias. Pros: greater flexibility in asking questions, respondents can ask for clarification, control over question order, higher response rate. Cons: possible selection bias, time, facelessness, non representative sample.
