PSYC 317 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Cognitive Load
Document Summary
Looking back and forth between two objects or events (both overt) would be divided attention. Paying attention to something you are looking at (overt) while at the same time paying attention to something off to the side (covert) would also be divided attention: selective attention as filtering. Initially auditory stimuli were used to test this hypothesis before visual stimuli were considered. Looking back on the cherry (1953) experiments: example of dichotic listening; shadowing: repeating target message out loud: treis(cid:373)a(cid:374)"s (cid:373)odifi(cid:272)atio(cid:374) to broad(cid:271)e(cid:374)t"s (cid:373)odel. Attenuator analyzes incoming message in terms of: physical characteristics, language, meaning. Cognitive resources: a person has a certain cognitive capacity for carrying out tasks. Task in which participants are told to carry out a task that requires them to focus their attention on specific stimuli and to ignore other stimuli. Lavie (2005: load is increased by adding additional stimuli to display.
