RELI 100 Lecture Notes 9 Sun Dance • Rituals show commitment to God and the tribe • Women just tied the ropes to their arms • Children try to distract the dancers by hitting them with sticks o Dancers must remain focused Vision Quest • Mark out a sacred boundary and stay in that place o exposed to the animals and elements • evoke the name of Wankan Tanka for days until you had a vision o little to no clothes or food • when you come back, a medicine man will interpret your vision quest • medicine man will say what its meaning was for both you and the tribe Sweat Lodge • create an enclosure using tree branches • make an igloo-type structure • cover it with animal skins o this is so no light can come in • dig a hole in the center • fill the hole with water • leave one flap open to the east • heat up stones in the fire • drop the stones in the water to create steam • loud, dark, wet, hot o similar to the womb • loud drumming like the heartbeat • relighting of all of the elements o earth, air, fire, water Monotheism • means one God: Theos • rejected idea of lessor divinities • removed other kinds of creations
