Barrel vault- semicylindrical in cross-section, is in effect a deep arch or an uninterrupted series of arches, one behind the other, over an oblong space. Historiated capital- ornamented with representations, such as plants, animals, or human figures, that have a narrative- as distinct from a purely decorative- function. Radiating chapel- in medieval churches, chapels for the display of relics that opened directly into the ambulatory and the transept. Romaesque art- roman like- sub par artistic culture; inability to create art in the antique style/manor. Great chain of being- g-d king lords vassels surfs. Those who fought (lords and knights), those who prayed (monks), those who worked (surfs) No 4th group the merchants- develop later. Relic- object or bone particle or piece of dust associated with a holy figure or holy setting- only gained significance when put into a container (reliquare) People would travel to holy land and collect dust from sites. Reliquares in church to prey before the relics.
