Document Summary

Uv spectroscopy is used to find the nature of conjugated pi electron system and is the only spectroscopy that is applicable for conjugated compounds. Class of compounds that contain 6 membered benzene like rings with 3 double bonds. Used to be classified as a fragrance, but not anymore. Aromatic compounds have acquired the most common names that you can use as a parent name. Monosubstituted are just named after the substituent and ends in -benzene. Disubstituted benzenes have three prefixes; ortho, meta, and para. Ortho: 2 substituents in a 1,2 relationship in the benzene ring. Meta: 2 substituents in a 1,3 relationship in the benzene ring. Para: 2 substituents in a 1,4 relationship in the benzene ring. In a benzene with 3+ substituents, number with the numbers being as little as possible. They are named based on the size of the alkyl group. If the alkyl group is 6 carbons or less, the arene will be an alkyl-substituted benzene.
