Stressors: things that push our buttons. Stress reaction: from alarm to exhaustion, physical and emotional responses. Stress: the process of appraising an event as threatening or challenging and responding to it. Type of stressors: catastrophes unpredictable large-scale events, often have company, significant life change may experience stress alone, daily hassles. Tend-and-befriend response: under stress, people (especially women) often provide support to others(tend) and bond with and seek support from others(befriend) Immune system influenced by age, nutrition, genetics, body temperature, and stress. In stressed people : surgical wounds heal more slowly, develop cold more readily, vaccines are less effective. More stress on hiv-infected individuals = faster progression. Stress affects the growth of cancer cells but does not create cancer cells.
