Document Summary

Culturing microorganisms: factors to consider, inoculation : we have to have a method, as well as material to grow the culture on. *fun fact: scientists have only been able to successfully grow 5% of the bacteria types in our mouths* *inoculation and incubation are the biggest challenges in studying organisms because each has its specific needs: obtaining pure cultures. Streak plate: place a small sample on edge of the plate of solid agar, isolate the colony-forming units (cfus) by streaking through four quadrants, colonies will develop on the surface. Pour plate: place the sample in liquid agar and mix, pour this into the empty plate. Let the agar harden, colonies will develop throughout the agar. Cfu: colony forming unit each isolated organism that will divide to form a colony of cells. *pure culture: a single type of organism in a culture* *mixed culture: intentionally 2+ organisms in a culture* *contaminated culture: bad aseptic technique resulted in unanticipated organisms: culture media.
