Bread and Roses
(1) Who is William Wood? Father died at 12, dropped out of school to provide for his
mother and siblings, loves to work and is a hard worker. (page 21) Worked in banks
and accounting to absorb that aspect of business. “Self-made man”
(2) What shapes his view? Money (page 24). Easy target. Many loathed him. Personal
experience.
(3) What is Lawrence like? Physical aspects? Employment? Work, tenements, lots
of people.
(4) Immigrant communities - Where from? Impact of? Europe, Italians, Turkey,
Syria. “Native born” are higher up.
(5) Strike - What starts it? Key underlying reasons? Labor law which reduces hours
and pay. Work conditions are underlying reasons of anger.
(6) IWW Socialists - Ettor & Haywood - Whats their role? What gives them
influence? IWW=Leadership. Experience and success. TRUE believers. Broad
base.
(7) Peace - Causes for-example? Not out of control..why? Children moved. Militia
felt threatened. Not out of control because of leadership.
Paradox: Produces clothing, bedding, etc and it is cheaper.
Creation = consumer economy.
